THE COMPLETE GUIDE
How to Play Truth or Drink Online
Truth or Drink is an answer-or-pass conversation game for adults and alcohol-free groups. Choose a mode, read the question aloud, and let the selected player answer honestly or pass. If legal-age adults decide to use alcohol, a pass can mean one small sip—never a shot, a chug, or a reason to pressure someone. Water, soda, juice, and mocktails preserve exactly the same game mechanic.
Truth or Drink Rules
- 01Choose the group. Play with two or more people who freely agree to join.
- 02Set boundaries. Decide which topics are off limits and make passing explanation-free.
- 03Select a mode. Normal is the safest starting point for most groups.
- 04Read one prompt. The current player answers or passes without debate.
- 05Rotate turns. Move clockwise or use the player spin wheel.
A host should remove any question involving trauma, private health information, passwords, illegal behavior, or another person’s secret. Do not film, post, touch, or contact someone outside the game without specific permission.
Choose a Truth or Drink Game Mode
Funny memories, habits, opinions, and light personal questions for friends.
High-energy group prompts that create stories without demanding secrets.
Flirty, non-explicit questions for consenting adults who agree on boundaries first.
Short creative performances with a pass option and no dangerous challenges.
A balanced shuffle across the other modes for established groups.
New groups should begin with Normal. Couples can move from Normal to Spicy only when both people want the change. Party and Dares work best when the room wants visible energy, while Mixed is better after everyone understands the tone.
Play Truth or Drink Responsibly
Every player may answer, pass, switch to a non-alcoholic drink, or leave the game at any time. No explanation, score loss, or replacement penalty is required.
Only adults of legal drinking age should use alcohol. Do not drink if you plan to drive or operate machinery, are pregnant or might be pregnant, take medication that interacts with alcohol, have a health condition made worse by drinking, or simply do not want to. The CDC recommends planning a sober ride before drinking, and notes that alcohol should be avoided during pregnancy and in several other circumstances.
Serving size and alcohol percentage both matter. The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism explains that a standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol, but common servings may contain more than one standard drink. This game never requires finishing a serving. Keep water and food available, set an end time, and stop serving alcohol when anyone shows impairment.
Confusion, difficulty staying conscious, vomiting, seizures, trouble breathing, clammy skin, or a very low body temperature may signal alcohol overdose. Call local emergency services immediately and do not leave the person alone. Coffee, cold showers, and walking do not reverse an overdose.
Truth or Drink for Couples
For couples, the game should invite conversation rather than test loyalty. Begin with favorite memories, everyday preferences, future date ideas, and compliments. Avoid questions about former partners, commitment, money, or intimacy unless both people explicitly include those topics. A pause is not evidence that someone is hiding something, and choosing not to answer should never become part of an argument.
For a gentler date-night format, use our Truth or Dare questions for couples. Friends and larger groups can browse party questions or the complete collection of Truth or Dare questions.
Truth or Drink Questions and Game Guides
Choose a collection that matches the people in the room instead of forcing one question list onto every group. The main question guide begins with funny prompts and increases intensity gradually, while the friends and couples pages use narrower boundaries. Alternative formats explain the search terms people also use for the same answer-or-pass style of game.
Truth or Drink FAQ
What is Truth or Drink?
Truth or Drink is a conversation game in which a player receives a question and chooses either to answer honestly or skip it. Some adults use a small sip as the skip action, but water or any non-alcoholic drink works equally well.
Can you play Truth or Drink without alcohol?
Yes. The game works with water, soda, juice, mocktails, or no drink at all. The important choice is answer or pass; alcohol is not required for the questions, pacing, or fun.
How many people can play?
Truth or Drink works with two people and scales well to groups of about four to eight. Larger parties can use the player spin wheel or divide into smaller circles so nobody waits too long.
What happens if someone does not want to answer or drink?
They pass with no penalty and receive another prompt or end their turn. Consent applies to both disclosure and drinking, so nobody should be asked to explain a skip.
Is Truth or Drink only for couples?
No. Classic and Party modes suit friends and groups, Spicy mode is designed for consenting adults, Dares adds performance prompts, and couples can use the game as a date-night conversation starter.
